Did you catch what happened? In the tussle over religious freedom violations in Obamacare, the President offered an alternative that amounts to an even bigger power grab.
Mulling this over I came across Charles Krauthammer making the same point. He’s smarter than me so go read his article. For those who are still here I will try to be brief.
Whether you are on the left or right you should vehemently object to what the Administration calls an “accommodation.”
Remember the controversy. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a regulation in accordance with powers granted by Obamacare. The regulation would force all employers providing health coverage to include birth control, including those that prevent implantation but not conception thus constituting an abortion in the Catholic view. Catholics and others interested in protecting the free exercise of religion roared in objection.
Seeking to limit the political damage of this opposition, the President offered an accommodation. He said employers did not have to provide the services they found morally objectionable, but since he believes everyone should have access to those services nonetheless, he mandates that insurers provide those services for free.
There is a lot to chew on here, but focus on the requirement to insurers. Here is Krauthammer:
“The President of the United States has just ordered private companies to give away for free a service that his own health and human services secretary has repeatedly called a major financial burden. On what authority? Where does it say that the President can unilaterally order a private company to provide an allegedly free-standing service at no cost to certain select beneficiaries? This is government by presidential fiat.”
This is an extraordinary dictate that is actually worse than the religious issue.
If this stands we have granted the President the authority to force private companies to do what he thinks is important.
Let’s pretend for a moment that we trust the benign magnificence of Obama. Through this precedent he now has the authority to force oil companies to provide free gas – after all that would be a huge boost to the economy. Free computers for all? Free food for all? Free homes for all? Why not.
Even if you like Obama you have just ceded him massive authority to turn America from free nation to a subject nation. Lest you think this might actually be a good thing, I urge you to consult your nearest history book and read what happened every other time someone tried.
Should you be a real lefty still not persuaded, imagine such power in the hands of W. Bush.
Forget the man, forget the goal and look only at the power. We the people do not want our President to gain such power.
